HOW-TO: Fixing Bad Updates for Windows 2000 / Win2K Security Update For Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 / 2008 KB2467174 and KB2467175

Recently my trusty Microsoft Windows 2000 computers requested to apply Security Update For Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 / 2008. At first I thought how kind of Microsoft to even include Windows 2000.

Security Update For Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 / 2008 KB2467174 and KB2467175

Boy was I mistaken! Horror of horrors, said updates are not compatible with Windows 2000! If you get bit too, here is how you easily go back:

  1. Download the file at this web page: Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)
  2. Download the file at this web page: Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86)
  3. Go to Add / Remove Programs and uninstall KB2467175.
  4. Go to Add / Remove Programs and uninstall KB2467174.
  5. IPL (aka Restart Windows)
  6. Install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)
  7. Install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86)
  8. IPL (aka Restart Windows)
  9. Fixed!

Followed the instructions

Followed the instructions explicitedly but no luck. After all of the above steps Symantec Endpoint Protection still wouldn't load. I even removed and reloaded Endpoint protection and still nothing.

Thanks.
